Communities Week Critical Question

“Communities for some people but not others”

Community generally refers to groups that share a similar: Beliefs, resources, goals, interests, preferences, religion, location, and the list goes on.

It really depends on the type of place you live in, say if you live in a place like Kew; You may know people and say the occasional ‘Hi’ if you are out in the front garden being stared down by little old ladies, but other than that you wouldn’t really have any communication with one another. But say if you were living in a small town, majority of the people would be friendly and there would be celebrations and gatherings, you would know more people and be friendlier. (I’m making no sense what so ever right now ahaha).

I believe that it’s essential to have different communities and not to exclude others, as it may encourage understanding, tolerance and appreciation between them. However I can also appreciate why some may exclude others as some types of communities can offer a sense of belonging, understanding, acceptance and a lack of judgement which are feelings that we all want and if anyone with opposite views were to belong in the community, it may make members of the community feel uncomfortable and therefore remove the sense of community therefore the above quote “communities for some people but not others” may apply.

Being with like-minded people gives us a ……….. Sense of community!

Week 2 – Critical Question Assessment

    Communities

    Hi Emma,

Your response identifies one of the core components of a successful community – being surrounded by like-minded, supportive people. I agree that people might locate / seek those people out in a variety of contexts.

I would have liked to see you draw more heavily on your experiences in class and on trail in order to support your opinions.

I encourage you to use a planning document to help you structure your response. You can use the one on the homework page as a guide – or let me know that you would like support and I can create an essay planner – similar to the one on the week 2 page. Here is a link to the homework page planner: http://teamgalileo.wikispaces.com/file/view/Critical%20Question%20Response%20Planner.pdf/443232312/Critical%20Question%20Response%20Planner.pdf

I look forward to your next piece of work!
